Chimney Repair in Valley East: Hanmer, Val Caron, and Blezard Valley

Valley East communities like Hanmer, Val Caron, Val Thérèse, and Blezard Valley see the same freeze-thaw chimney damage as the urban core — sometimes worse, given the rural exposure. Here is what to watch for.

The Valley East communities — Hanmer, Val Caron, Val Thérèse, and Blezard Valley — sit north of the Sudbury urban core and include a mix of established subdivisions and rural properties. Many homes here rely on wood-burning fireplaces or wood stoves as a primary or supplemental heat source, which means chimney maintenance is not optional.

Creosote buildup is the most immediate concern for wood-burning chimneys. In a Northern Ontario winter where a wood stove might run for six months straight, creosote accumulates quickly — especially if unseasoned wood is burned or if fires are kept low and smouldering. Annual cleaning and inspection before the heating season is the baseline recommendation.

Beyond cleaning, the masonry itself needs attention. Chimney crowns in Valley East properties take a beating from the exposed conditions — wind-driven rain, heavy snow loads, and dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter. Cracked or missing crowns are one of the leading causes of accelerated chimney deterioration.

Spalling brick on chimney stacks is also common in these communities. Once the face of a brick flakes away, the underlying material absorbs water far more readily and the damage compounds with each passing winter. Spalled bricks need to be replaced, not patched.

Rural and semi-rural properties in Blezard Valley and the surrounding area sometimes have older stone chimneys that require a different approach than standard brick repair. Stone chimneys need mortar matched carefully to the original — using too-hard a mix can cause the stone faces to crack.
